Hi! Just joined the forum, as I have found a lot of great information on here, and would like to tap into the vast knowledge of the great people here!
Ok, so a little background. I just bought a 2005 f250 6.0L Diesel in very good shape, but it has 245,000 miles on it... I was told it needs some glow plugs replaced, and possably the oil cooler. It does run and drive fine, so I thought it wasn't too bad of a deal at $3,800!
So first thing I noticed is it is leaking coolant somewhere that is getting onto the serpentine belt, and getting flung all around the engine compartment. Can anybody tell me what is most likely to be leaking in that area? From my understanding, the oil cooler usually just plugs up, causing lack of cooling to engine oil and EGR cooler... Are water pumps a known issue with these?
I have had no experience with the Powerstrokes, but do a lot of mechanic work on other things, so will most likely be doing the repairs myself. Any pointers would be appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
Andrew B.
Yeah, starts kind of hard cold... So glow plugs will be checked. With the SG2 I would be looking at the Engine Oil Temp? What do these usually run? Thanks!
Hard cold starts use the SCANGAUGEII to check FICM ALT Batterys as More a Main Priority for cold hard starts Then if it does turn out to be GlowPlugs then Fine
GlowPlugs are Considered an Emmissions Control so any issue with them Should set a CEL/DTC
I plan on checking the FICM right away, as I understand that is a major problem... Just got it yesterday, so haven't had time to look at it yet. ;-)
Up here in ND this time of year seldom gets above 30, and usually down to 0 or slightly below overnight. What weight oil is recommended for those temps?

fyi, if you feel it is time for replacing that FICM, checkout FICMrepair.com
I wasn't having any problems with mine, but I decided to replace it anyway and add a FICM tune as well. Ed is a great guy to deal with.
I run 5w-40 Synthetic Moter Oil look in my sig below
I havent plugged in yet its been around 10*-25*f in the AM Sometimes and Starts Fine A touch Lope Idel for first minute But NO Misfire and the troublesome stuff that goes with some
If you just got the Truck then Best thing you can do is get a Gauge to read info of the OBDII Port
I use ScanGaugeII they sell at AutoZone for around 160.00 it will do what you need and Has everything in the Pkage you just have to enter some Info you will get from Here
Josh runs a DashBoss whats Great to might just take longer to get it You could ask Josh about it I do like DB Display
But if having Cold Hard starts Best to check FICM and Batts and Alt ASAP SGII will do it so will DB
Check into them and the guys here will give you a Rundown
Hey guys, thanks for all the advice!
I just went out this morning, and tried to start it just to see what it would do... It's about 12° here this morning, so it was a good cold start (or not start, as it turned out). I am now 99% sure I have a bad FICM! It sounds just like this one:
