Stock vs Mods

My truck is basically stock. Never been chipped or anything like that. It had a 4 inch exhaust on it when I bought it. I want my truck to last for a long time. Would like to get at least 600k - 700k miles. Question is, will I need to mod it to achieve this?

No, you don't need to mod it to make it last, only maintain it. The weak link on the factory motor is the airbox. They have been known to warp, get broken tabs, or leak. Keep a close eye on that and change to a different filter set up if there's any indication in my leak.

as mentioned. maintaining is paramount.

and in that maintaining part things do wear out over time. when you go to fix them (like up pipes for example) you can upgrade and its not neceessary a mod. but not a bad thing to do type of thing.

There are mods that aid longer life... like the Hutch mod, a better intake (like the AIS), fuel additive, synthetic oil (recommended for injectors and turbo), and I'm partial to the FRx to eliminate the dead-head. Opinions vary on the fuel additive, but even the dealership recommended fuel additive with cetane boost and lubrication (at a diesel maintenance class I attended) for this generation of truck. The basic rules - plenty of:
  • Clean oil
  • Clean fuel
  • Clean air

Have you done any mods to your truck? I know what you mean on the airbox. Both tabs on mine are broken. I have a homemade clamp keeping it closed for now. I looked into replacing the airbox but they're fairly expensive on eBay. Supply and demand at it finest.

Just a few days ago my truck stalled on me 3 times within a mile. Scary experience when you are on a busy freeway with no where to pull off. I finally got to a parking lot and saw the "Water in Fuel" light was flashing when I stalled. Drained the fuel bowl and has been great ever since. This experience has me seriously considering an aftermarket fuel filter.

I am all about stock but with mods to improve stock running/longevity like Tugly mentioned about the hutch mod.

I don't feel the need for more power, just take care of what I got.

I do maintenance more than anything. I have done injector O-rings, turbo pedestal o-rings, ICP o-rings, 50 cent mod, dead head fuel fix (FRx), and the like. I plan to do the in tank mods one of these summers as well.

Diesel fuel is hydrophilic (attracts water)... A quality fuel filter with a water-stripper will accumulate water (that is what it is made to do), so even if you get an aftermarket filter you need to regularly drain off the water. In addition, if you don't keep water out of your fuel system you will get some nasty things growing in the fuel system. These critters (fungi, yeasts, sulfate reducing bacterias) will do a job on injectors (they form corrosive byproducts metabolically). Best advice: buy fuel from those places that sell lots of fuel, keep your tank filled (to reduce condensation), drain fuel filters regularly and look for water in the fuel drained, change fuel filters religously. If you find water, deal with it immediately.

You could just mod the air system to a 6637 filter...it is inexpensive, but very good filtration. Here is what it looks like...

I prefer the AIS system, but it is much more costly.

If you think a better air intake is fairly expensive wait untill dirty air kills your turbo (best case scenairo) hopefully doesnt take out your motor while its at it.
Just my .02.

Is that your truck Neal? If so what type of batter cables do you have? I need a better set up.

Those are stock cables and clamps for '02-'03 models. The earlier trucks were different.
