Has anyone ever done or seen a way to have our 4x4 hubs on the d50 or d60 to be auto as well as manual like all the newer style 3/4 tons and 1 tons without obviously switching to the newer axles?
That way we could run 4x4 from inside with the hubs in auto and/or worse comes to worse get out and manual lock them as well.
Yes I know you can lock the hubs in advance and keep it in 2wd until you want to pull the lever but playing devils advocate here. Either by adapting some type of electrical or cable system (similar to 4x4autolok cable installs) to our trucks instead of vacuum style or auto spring loaded hub style sensing power to the front that most commonly use that can act up alot?
Just something ive always wanted to be able to do and I figure with enough time and/or money it could be done. Like mentioned im not looking to argue with people over it, just sincere question of any ideas of how it can be done or know anyone thats done it before without just taking the easy route and buying a newer axle out of a superduty and using its vacuum system?
That's just asking for problems..... I'd keep it manual.
But I didn't know the newer trucks had that semi manual/auto hubs. I still see brand new Fords with manual hubs, always taught they kepted those cause they were so reliable!
im so used to un/locking hubs id feel silly with auto's now.always feel like forgetting something.when you start making the things auto, you always encounter issues.
you can't beat a lever for the t-case and you can't beat a dial on the hubs.anything else is for the city boys who don't want to dirty their loafers, and those asking for troubles.
it takes less that 15 seconds and you know your locked in.

Yes the newer ones are manual and auto. As in you can leave them in auto and turn the 4x4 system off and on from inside the cab or if you want you can get out and lock them manually themselves.
I dont know why everyone is getting bent out of shape, they are still manual just like ours, they just also have the added feature of being able to run in auto and just turn it off and on from inside the truck. Seems like a win win to me.
While yes some people have problems with the vacuum system, I personally have never even a single time had problems with them or even the live axle setup from my ranger. N like mentioned even if for some reason you do, you can still get out and manually lock them just like ours and be good to go. Sounds perfect to me and would be a worth while swap for me if I could find a way to do it without using a vacuum system; say maybe something cable driven or electrical.
there is no auto/manual combination hub kit for the dana50/60 front axle, sorry.
if it was possible and someone built a complete kit either vac or electrical operated,it probably would never sell due to a very expensive price tag.
your options are the oem auto lockers or oem/aftermarket manual lockers.
some people claim the auto lockers served them well.even in use today.i never had any luck with them.went right to manual locker replacements on my last 9th gen,and this one came with warn manuals from ford and saved me the hassle.
My 1994 F150 4x4 has it's factory spring loaded Auto hubs on it, 92k miles on it and so far they're working fine. Been using them alot lately, with these massive dumps of snow were getting.
But if/when they ever start giving me problems, i'm not gonna hesitate getting some manual lock ones!
