Airbag code 3-2
From what I can find that code means its the clock spring, but since its seems to be intermittent should I try to replace the clock spring or wait until it gets worse? I had to replace the airbag module a year or two ago so hopefully thats still fine. I'm not sure if its related but sometimes it will make a ratcheting noise when you turning the steering wheel, it definitely sounds like it in the cab but I haven't been able to pin point it. It was making the ratcheting noise yesterday.
the ratcheting noise could be a plastic plug scraping over the clock spring assembly.
to check inside the steering wheel, first disconnect the battery cables, wait 30 minutes, then you can remove the four 10mm nuts located behind the steering wheel, (you'll need a long/deep 10mm socket), then pull the SRS (airbag) cover to remove the entire airbag assembly, very carefully disconnect the plug from the clockspring to the air bag, place the airbag in a safe place away from children, wife, anybody, and then you can reconnect the battery cables, driving the van around the block to see if you can repeat the noise while looking at the clockspring and wiring as you turn the wheel. (the clockspring is the round disc exactly behind the steering wheel aluminum frame). Looks like a CD and it has a plug that doesn't come off.
I did away with my airbag, disconnected everything, removed the bag from the steering wheel, don't want an explosive device pointing at my face. I am not reccomending you do this, but my airbag was getting too old for me to feel comfortable. I always wear my seatbelt. I don't trust airbags.
to reinstall everything, disconnect the battery again and reverse the removal steps.
