IGNITION SWITCH PROBLEMS - wont stay running

hi i have a 85 f150, manual tranny, fixed colum, when i turn the ignition swith back to acc position i have to mess with it and wiggle it to make the radio come on. also when i go to start the truck it will start just fine but when i let off the switch to disengage the starter sometimes it will not stay running, id have to restart it and be quick and wiggle the switch so it will stay running. if i hit a hard bump or accidentally bump the keys it will shut off untill i wiggle the switch while its still in gear going down the road for the ignition to cut back on (makes a loud backfire)lol. im thinkin its the ignition lock cylinder. but i havend messed with a 80s model switch before, only 70s...... ANY INPUT IS APPRECIATED

I would think it's the electrical part of the switch down at the bottom of the column, if the ignition is cutting out.

If the lock cylinder is sticky and not sloppy -loose- I would just pop it out and put some light grease on the gear and actuator rack to see if it gets any better.

Maybe the teeth on the actuator are just worn out, and it needs replacing?

ok i would think its gotta be somethin near the switch itself, is there a diagram or somethin? its like the switch has to be in the perfect spot for either the acc (one back from lock), and when the ignition is on. would the actuator cause that?

If the teeth have a lot of free play, perhaps.

But the detents are in the switch down on the bottom of the column.
Perhaps it's mis-adjusted or just worn out.

There is a small hole under the lock cylinder. Turn the key to run (run or start i forget) and shove something (a small allen wrench works well) in there, it slides right out.

Sounds like the ignition switch is worn out or out of adjustment.

Replacing the Ignition Cylinder lock more than likely won't make a difference with this problem.

First thing I'd do is adjust the Ignition Switch on the lower end of the column, behind the dash. You have to be careful because you can adjust it too much in the opposite direction and the truck will keep cranking etc...

The Ignition Switch and Ignition lock cylinder are seperated and are at opposite ends of the column. They are connected together with a actuating rod about 1-1/2 feet in length. If the ignition switch is out of adjustment or worn out, it will do exactly what you describe. Screws hold the ignition switch to the column. loosen the screws and slide the ignition switch closer to the steering wheel slightly and see if that improves things. Keep track how much you move it as you may need to place it back, or move it slightly in the opposite direction for maximized function. If adjusting the switch doesn't work, I'd replace it with a new one.
