2001 vs 2005 Differential Question please help

Wife blew out the rear diff on our 2001 F150 Supercrew Lariat.

Has 8.8 with 3.55 gears

Question is I found a 2005 F150 rear end with 3.55, but it's a 9.75 so the pumpkin is probably bigger, but it comes complete. Axels, brakes, everything. Other than the 6 bolt pattern on the axels (so my rims won't fit), will this rear end bolt up to my 2001. Will the drive shaft, springs, shocks, Ubolts, all match up? Will my 2001 axels fit in the tubes so I can swap those out so I can still use my wheels?

Any advice is appreciated. I can get the rear for $300 and just do the swap (super low mileage) vs having my rebuilt for $1,000.

Thanks

The axle bearings on the 8.8 have an id of 1.618"
the 9.75's are an id of 1.708" for the 2001
Not sure on the pinion yoke difference
Might be more trouble than it's worth
You can double check with a parts retailer to
find what the parts/seals ect differences are.

none of the parts are interchangeable, but you can probably install the entire axle as a unit. I dont know for sure, but dont sounld like a difficult change, except for the u-joint from the old drive shaft to the new pumpkin.

Steve, did not most 5.4's come with the 9.75?
If so, he should be able to find 5 bolt axles for it so his rims would
fit.
Not sure about that

Yes. i have a 5.4 CREW with the 9.75 axle. I though he was talking about mixing the 8.8 and 9.75 parts.

I think his biggest concern was the 6 stud axles
There are only a few u-joint options,he should be able to measure for differences there.

Are the shock mounts in the same spot between the 2 generations ?? That is another concern regarding the inter changeability.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the comments. My wife's '01 4x4 lariat has the 4.6 not the 5.4. It appears the '05 rear end swap with my '01 will be more trouble than it's worth. $300 for the rear, plus either 6 hrs of my effort or $250 for a mechanic, I'd hire someone for this since I don't have the time. Found a place in San Diego that specializes in rebuilding rear diff's. They will rebuild mine in the truck for $650 and include a 1 year warranty. They've been in business since 1971. It's a far cry from the $1000 - $1200 quotes from local shops. I'll be going that route.

Thanks again.

That does sounds reasonable for the work that is involved. Good luck with it.

My only concen at the $650 price is whether or not that might include any hard parts. I rebuilt my 8.8...3.55 a few months back. I replaced every bearing, even axle bearings, all races, crush sleeve and all 3 seals....3 quarts of 75-140 full synthetic....and I spent about $275 bucks on all those parts. My ring and pinion were as shiny as a mirror and I took the chance it having the whine back reusing those gears. Well...it does whine loudly between 40-50mph, but at least I know all the bearings are good now. I tried to save a buck and it is my own fault. Sooooo...if there is any question once they are inside ...pay the extra $ for a new ring and pinion and a pattern run.
