What brand of coffee did you sailor guys use? Or do you even know? It probably came in a can labeled "Coffee" and that was it.
Actually, on my last three ships, I was able to get from my SYSCO rep a complete interlocking grinder / brewer unit and I bought Columbian dark roast beans. The best damned coffee that a sailor ever drank.
my wife and i got one for a gift. it was really nice and neat to use for a while. We found the best coffee deals from Green Mountain Coffee online. They had specials where you buy three boxes and get a 4th free. And their selection was very big. After a while the Keurigs get clogged, especially if you have hard water. The heating element inside gets coated with the calcium deposits and running full strength CLR does not help enough to get it to work properly. We've had ours sitting on the shelf collecting dust for the past year because i really dont feel like taking it apart to clean the heating element. The hassle and the cost of the cups is just too offputting. For now we're enjoying the regular coffee pot and much less expensive Maxwell House and flavored coffees by the pound.

I don't know if CLR is better, but you are suppose to clean them by running vinegar through them a few times..
Tim: Off topic, where does the term "cup of joe" come from? Hint, it's USN related.
Here's your trivia answer of the day:
There is an attribution to Josephus Daniels (1862-1948) who, as Secretary of the U.S. Navy under President Woodrow Wilson in 1913, was said to have abolished the officers' wine mess. And thus coffee became the strongest drink aboard navy ships known as "a cup of Joe".
This theory does not stand up to scrutiny.
The most likely source is as a shortened form of 'a cup of jamoke' - which was a common reference to coffee, its being a compound of Java and Mocha. There are examples of the jamoke usage throughout popular culture including in the Preston Sturges movie Hail The Conquering Hero (1944).
As for cleaning a coffee pot:
Even in regular coffee makers of all ilks, vinegar should be used on a regular basis to negate the effects of hard water, to clean the lines and to help maintain that fresh tasting brew. I would never use CLR or any chemical that is unsafe for human consumption to clean a piece of food service equipment.
You guys are dead on about the vinegar. CLR, in my experience is good for nothing but filling the plastic container it comes in.
Anyway, Kuerig has a very good customer service outfit. My wifes first one went to crap, the pump wouldn't prime even with new filters. She called Kuerig, explained the problem, and they sent her a replacement unit, no charge, and the same model she had.
Yep, we read and followed the users manual and used the vinegar regularly. We've gone through probably a dozen coffee pots in the past 17 years, so we do know how to use and take care of them. But the vinegar does not get the calcium build up off. It's just a matter of time though that the hard water will clog the heater. I'm guessing those with soft water wont see much of an issue with it. CLR works but the items it's used on my thouroghly be washed and cleaned afterwards. It works really well for unclogged shower head sprayer holes too. But that's just my experience with the keurig.

Swabbies had been drinking grog since day one, which was a mixture of water and rum. In 1914, Daniels banished the use of all alcohol, coffee then became the strongest drink aboard. Hence "cup of joe."
1956: Bracken was broke, put his 6,000 sq ft two story house at 207 N. Saltair Ave. in Brentwood up for sale for 50 grand.
My mom was a real estate agent, knew the west side market, bought the house for 45 grand, sold the front half of the property that consisted of an orange grove and tennis court to a builder for 25 grand.
1960: Mom sold the house to the Chancellor of UCLA for 70 grand.
