This question is in referance to my 1984, F150 with 300 l6, carburated. Is this a TFI ignition system? It doesn't look like the old Duraspark ignition system that my 1979 F150 have.
I have a feeling that this is a tfi ignition system. My problem is lack of power, could this have something to do with the fact someone cut all the wires going to the carburator?
What type of ignigtion system should I replace the factory system with? Instead of trying to patch all this back togather.
USA 50 state models from 1984 up F-150's with the 300-6 had the TFI-IV, EEC-IV ignition system. The TFI-IV was used with Carburetors or EFI.
Timing on these varied depending on calibration. From 6 BTDC to 14 BTDC. The average being 10 BTDC. The best way to figure it out is on the emissions lable located on the radiator support.
Be aware that there are special proceedures to adjust the timing on the TFI-IV system. Disconnecting the Spout connector is one such proceedure.
Also the entire computer system, and computer controls on the engine have to be in good working order, with nothing removed, otherwise the trucks computer will have the engine in limp home mode. This sets everything at a base level. No ignition timing advancement, or fuel mixture adjustment are made in limp home mode.
If you do not have a vacuum advance on the distributor, the you probably have the TFI. Since the wires are cut, that's not good. Go get a duraspark ii distributor, module and maybe a little bit of the wiring harness, and convert it. You probably don't have any power, and lousy fuel mileage also with no timing advance. There are not advance mechanisms in your dist at all with the tfi.
If you happen upon a parts truck that has all this stuff, grab the carb too.
The TFI ignition is gone!!!! Truck all ready runs smoother and feels like it has more power.
The new ignition is a Factory Duraspark distributor, MSD 6AL Ignition box and MSD street blaster coil.
I'm in the middle of wiring so excuse the wires. I'm going to add Oil, Water and RPM gauge while I'm at it.
