that said, i've done the 3g upgrade 4 different times if i remember right, maybe it was 5. they're usually like 30 bucks at the junkyard, including as much of the wire harness as you choose to leave attached to it
At this point to be honest I am trying to just get the thing on the road whilst doing it right but not specifically looking for up-grades. This has been a long project and I just want to see it on the road. It ran great before I pulled it from the 68 and never had a lick of trouble nor had any need for a bigger alternator so I will stick with what I have had for the time being.

I also have been told by Gary that the high output alt may cause a big problem with my 52 ammeter so I dont want to go down that road at this point

Since your ammeter just senses the current instead of having it run directly through it there shouldn't be a problem if your alternator puts out a bit more than the original generator - like 65 instead of the original 40 amps. In fact, it isn't going to hurt your truck nor its wiring if your alternator puts out 130 amps. In fact, I'm not sure it would truly hurt the ammeter, but it would sure peg it.

I've only caught bits and pieces of this thread, but has your alternator got an internal voltage regulator? If so, you should not need an external one. Also if you check, even late 60's fords used 6 volt guages in a 12 volt system; and used a voltage reducer. I used a "runtz" voltage reducer in my truck from Speedway Motors. If this is off topic, my apologies. I'll shut up now...
