Fuel Additive

I see many different post as to different additives for the diesel. Diesel Clean, ATF, two stroke oil etc. Why do we need an additive at all? Do any of these actually replace what we lost with the new low sulphur fuel? Do any of them help mileage?

Need the additive for added lubricity for the IP/Injectors, how well they work is all up to debate just keep in mind the recomended dosages are for OTR trucks not pickups so you have to multiply by 2-4X

I think you'll find as many opinions on this as you do threads discussing it......

I'm sure there are, I couldn't find a thread discussing this specifically. Can anyone recommend how much ATF to use?

Why would you need more additive for a pickup than a semi?
Here is a link to one of the many studies out there.

if this was true, how do you explain the fact that i now have close to 175,000 miles on the injectors and pump on my 88 and never ever ever run additives.
additives do nothing for lubrication of the pump.
they do help keep things clean though.

I disagree, however the question becomes, do we need the added lubrication? Once again, debatable. Really it comes down to the fuel itself and how good it is. Its my understanding that modern diesel fuel already has addatives in it when you pump into your tank. Originally when they switched to LSD and ULSD it did not.

Also, i believe our "low pressure" fuel system isnt hit near as hard by the dry fuel as high pressure direct injection systems.

As for my opinion /observation, i put power service in, truck runs better. Running a WMO blend, i have better mileage. Do i run power service every tank, not even close, maybe once a month

that is what i was getting at. people say without sulfur the pump gets no lubrication. i say bullsheot. there is actually more lubricant in the new ulsd than there was in the old high sulfur fuel.

whether you want to run an additive for it's cleaning powers of for better mileage is up to you, but as for the lubrication, it is totally false.

agreed, the added lubercation is kind of irrelivant. however i am a beleaver in running it in my truck to keep things clean and to keep fuel fresh

X2, I run Howes conditioner every now and then to keep things clean. Or when I store for winter, I dump a full bottle in the tank for winter.

Weather is lubes or not, I guess theres no real way of knowing, but I got 377k miles out of the original IP (3rd set of injectors) on my 7.3 by just running ATF once in a while in it throughout the years.

i use some from time to time, but it's never helped with economy that iv noticed and iv got over 140 tanks hand calculated now lol.
im using some howes from time to time now.got a large jug at the truck stop.
fuel is already so dang expensive,i don't feel like making it worse.i guess if i just drove 3-6k miles a year or something id just use it every tank.but not when going 15-20k per yr.too dang expensive.id rather just keep fresh ip and injectors if im gunna pay.

as much as you want. if you have a good source of it used and a good filter, you can run over half ATF if you want to. if you're having to pay full price for the stuff, dump in a couple quarts now and then and don't worry about it. its almost impossible to over-do it for our engines.
but if your goal is economical, keep close records of fuel consumption and everything added to it, to help you calculate if your additives are saving you money or costing you money.
