I have searched, but most posts are in regards to hard to shut doors after new weatherstripping. I have the original weather stripping and I have to slam all four doors hard to get them to shut. Anyone know how to fix this? Drives me nuts going around after my kids jump in and having to slam all 4 doors.
I doubt you have the original weatherstrips on your truck, because if you did, you wouldn't have to slam the doors. The weatherstrips have been replaced at some point.
The 'fat' repro's are based on the 'fat' Ford "service part replacement" (parts sold at the parts counter) weatherstrips, not the factory installed weatherstrips.
FoMoCo did not offer the factory installed weatherstrips at the parts counter, were only installed on new trucks. These weatherstrips were as flat as Kansas so the doors would close properly.
This slamming the door jazz affects all 1948/79 (and probably newer trucks as well), myriad year Passenger Cars/Econolines/Bronco's that have had the weatherstrips replaced.
There's a thread running right now in the 1961/66 forum inre to this problem.
I purchased new weather stripping from Dennis Carpenter and found it to work perfectly. The biggest difference was made when I removed the door panels and placed sound deadener on the door. Sounds like a new vehicle when the door closes.
I have kinda a hard time shutting my doors now that they have the new seals but dont really have to slam them. I need to replace the pins in the driver door.... I think ima just get new hinges and do it the easy way if thats even possible.
I would say that either the door striker is out of adjustment or the plastic piece surrounding the striker which the door makes contact with to close is either worn down or missing. Just for clarification, is there resistance when trying to shut the door normally or when trying to shut the door softly it does not close like you'd like it to?
Easy first thing to try; Spray white lithium grease into all the latch mechanisms and on all the hinges then open/shut them several times to work it in. maybe they are all just sticky from age/buildup. I've had just doing that, fix hard to shut doors before.
