Bed removal or tank drop...

If you had access to do either one when doing the in tank mods, which would be easier?

Just looking into the future for planning the use of the neighbors tractor and front end loader....I am leaning towards the bed removal myself.

Also, it would give me a chance to clean up the bed floor a bit from PO screw-ups.

I can't imagine anything easier than dropping the tank to do intank mods. I did it by myself in an afternoon (removal, mods, install).

I never done that, because I have Excursions. However, from previous reading, a number of people seemed to think the bed removal was easier...ONLY WHEN they didn't have to cut off any of the bolts holding it in. So, if you think some of the bolts are rusted in there permanently, maybe it'd be best to drop the tank. I think somewhere on here there's a pic or video of one of the members removing the entire bed by himself (with the help of a small tractor and pulley system ).

Again, never had to do it on a pickup. On the Excursion, you HAVE to drop it, but it's a different tank setup than the pickups.

I dropped my tank. Was easier the second time.
When the body shop recently replaced a bed side, and removed the bed, they said it took a couple of hours and cutting three of the bolts.
Would be nice to be able to see the frame, etc., but it might be tough.

Ive done it both ways, personally i can do it much quicker dropping the tank with 2 ratchet straps. But if you are looking to do other things while the bed is off then go for it.
When you go to put the plastic cap back on the tank after doing the mods, put it in the microwave for 30 sec first, it will go right on then, alot of times if you dont it can be a pain to get the threads started.

I used cam lock straps to lower it. Switched to ratchet straps to raise it.

I had no problem with the ring in mid Dec. I marked the ring and after breaking it loose slowly turned until it was free. When loose I made a mark on the tank next to the mark on the ring. That made it easy to line up the ring for re-install. Went right on.

Yep, better choice for lowering. 2 of the 3 ive done i needed to warm the ring to get it started, maybe just me i guess.

Had to switch to the ratchet straps for raising the tank because the cam lock straps just weren't getting it.

I'd read about the ring being a PITA so I thought I would use index marks. I may have just gotten lucky.

I have done both, dropping the tank is easier by far, Those bed bolts are darn near impossible to take off without destroying them or your tools. I dropped my tank with a floorjack and a piece of plywood on top by myself.

That's how I did it too after siphoning the last few gallons of fuel.

i always pull the bed, because any time i have to get to the tank it is always full. and by pulling the bed, i get the opportunity to clean and paint the frame and the underside of the bed.
