Hey I've recently been having some starting problems with my truck it would turn over and run for about 5 seconds then would stall out and not start again unless I were to pour ga down the carb. After I poured gas down the carb it would run and stay going no problem I'd just have to keep it at about 2000 rpm for a minute or so until it warmed up. Everyone who I spoke to said it was either fuel filter was clogged or I had a bum fuel pump. I replaced all the lines coming from my pump my fuel filter and my pump but I am still having this problem. Is it my carb? Does anyone know o anything else I could try?
almost sounds like your choke isn't working. next time you go to start it, pull off the air cleaner and watch the choke, it should be fully closed when cold with the key on after you slap the gas pedal, and it should stay mostly closed for the first couple minutes as it warms up. it should open as it warms up and stay open from there.
if it doesn't, clean it real good, and if necessary replace the stuff inside the black cap that runs the choke. its a trouble-prone system cause it uses a steel tube through the exhaust manifold to provide heat to the system, but this is prone to rotting through and pumping carbon into the choke, causing problems.
My carb does not have any vacuum hoses it has a manual choke which does not work well but even in warm weather it will do the same thing out of the blue I've started it at minus 10 before without a problem it's just recent
How good are you with tapping your right foot? Next time you go to start it, pump it a couple of times BEFORE you start cranking on it. Then crank it, and when it starts to die out, pat the gas pedal really fast, don't floor it, but pat it to about halfway down at a really fast pace. If the engine recovers, it will run a little bit and it may try to die again. Be ready, and pat the gas again. You can do this till it finally will run on it's own.
If this scenario works, it is a choke problem. By patting the gas, all you are doing is pumping fuel down into the engine to make it run. In other words, instead of getting out and pouring fuel down in the carb with a bottle, you are doing it with the accelerator pump, by quickly pumping the pedal. You should see what's wrong with your manual choke. You won't have to mess with it if you get the choke working.
No luck at all I've tried this I still need to pour gas down in order to get it running any other ideas I can try I've called around they are sayin 250+ to rebuild it that's just rediculous considering I'm planning to swap a 351w in it in about a year
Did you inspect the fuel lines coming off the tank to the fuel rails along the frame? Did you replace your fuel line from the frame to the fuel pump? I've seen those crack and suck in air. It is possible that you are getting fuel long enough to start it and then running dry because your pump cannot maintain suction (vacuum) on the fuel supply side of things, causing the truck to lose the fuel prime.
You won't necessarily leak any gas as those lines aren't under pressure. Just go down the fuel line from your fuel pump and anywhere you find old, hard rubber fuel line, replace it. You won't have that much to replace.
