Hi, i have an 87 f-150, i know its a year to new but its got a carb so, you guys are usually where i turn with carb problems, due to your amount of knowlage,
Well i live in NH and its about 0 Deg. outside, and recently when i start my truck with the choke on and everything it starts right up then dies out, every time. to keep it running you must play with the gas pedal for a few minutes then it is fine, and will run like a top, so i was wondering if anyone had any ideas where to start to figure out the problem, it has a mechanical choke, and its a 351w, thanks guys.
sounds like the choke isn't working right. When you say mechanical choke, do you mean a choke cable? Normally a choke closes all the way until the engine starts to turn over then vacumn pulls the butterfly open about 1/8 of an inch. Too little and the engine will flood and too much and the engine will not get enough fuel to run while cold. If you have the type choke that comes with the carb either electrical or heat riser then the choke needs adjusting. If you have the cable type then the cable may need adjusting.
If it fires right up runs a few seconds then dies your loosing fuel from the pump. Normal evaporation is normal in the carb overnight even if it's below zero. Your fuel pump has a built in check ball that is supposed keep fuel in the pump over night, it operates the same way the one way valve on the window washer does. Ive seen alot of fuel pumps do this even some new ones that were made below OEM standards so its hard to say if a new pump would even help.
