Are you 2wd or 4wd? I have always had 4wd and never felt the need to put weight in the back of the truck. One thing to remember too, what ever you put back there, if not properly secured, can become a projectile in the event of and accident and can shift around as you are turning or stopping aburptly and possibly cause you to slide more.
I have put 5 70# sand tubes in the bed of both my 2000 Super duty crew cab 4wd 6.5 ft box and in my 2006 f150 crew cab 5.5ft box 4wd, both trucks see snow just as much as you do since I am in Wisconsin, both trucks ride great and drive well with the added weight, you can pick up the sand tubes at Menards, Home Depot or Lowes. The added benefit of sand tubes is if you do get stuck you have sand to use!!
we put about 300lbs in the back of my grandpas '04 4x4 super crew. he also runs blizzak studdless snow tires. all that combined its like a tank in the snow. the weight helps ALOT. the *** end of the truck doesnt step out very easy. take the weight out and it will step out much easier.
