I just recently bought a 95 F150 with a 351. The truck has high mileage, about 190k, and I am not sure how long the transmission has left. It rides smooth down the road, but when I put the truck into reverse it hesitates for a moment then makes a loud clunking sound(as if a door is being slammed) and then jerks into gear. The reverse works great at the moment though. Should I be worried, is there anything I can do to fix this?
I had one that did this too - a bottle of Lubegard fixed it over 2-3 months.
Reverse operates at double the pressures of the forward gears, & I understand there is a valve that reduces this pressure, momentarily, as you engage reverse.
Mine was not working properly/sticking, but fortunately the Lubegard saved the day.
How many times does it shift? A C6 will shift 1-2 and 2-3. It could also be an E4OD, which will shift 1-2, 2-3, lock the torque converter, and then shift 3-4.
This sounds like wear or slop in the driveline, not wear in the transmission. I would look at the u-joints, carrier bearing if equipped, or excess play in the rear end. The 8.8 is a fine rear end, but they do not last forever without a little attention. Check the simple parts first, but do not overlook the possibility of a worn out rear end.
Jack one rear wheel up off of the ground and put a jackstand under the axle. Put the tranny in park with the emergency brake off. Rock the jacked up wheel back and forth and see if you hear the clunking. If you do then you have a driveline problem, not a transmission problem. You can further diagnose the problem by crawling under the truck and have some one move the tire back and forth while you are looking to see where the noise is coming from or for any apparent slop in the rear end, yokes, u-joints, etc.
I know this is a dead thread... but I'm having a very similar problem with many troublesshooting attempts with no success..
I have a 94 F250 with an EDO4 at 137k. Tranny was rebuilt at 111k... over 10 years aho. She was a grandpa daily for years. Super clean.
I've changed all the sensors that were throwing codes, new tranny fluid and filter, new u joint, and now I'm down to the rear diff.
I'm waiting on a gasket and will be opening her up soon. Perhaps a rebuild kit along with the new fluid, but really just to get a look inside. Not sure if she was ever changed.
I'll try some Lucas transmission fix and see how it goes, but I'm starting to believe it's a drive train issue.
I'll jack her up to and listen for clunks and hopefully pin point and update, but at this point.. any other ideas?
