When I start my explorer it starts then shuts down immediately. If I keep my foot on the gas I can start it and drive. as soon as I release my foot it dies. Just trying to see if any one has an idea before I bring it to a mechanic.
Welcome to FTE!
What year is yours? I worked on one before, a 91, that had a stalling problem. Turned out somebody had messed with the idle stop adjustment on the throttle body. I would also suspect a plugged or inoperative idle air control solenoid. Try cleaning the throttle body, and see if that helps.
Figured it out thanks for the info. the IAC was sticking. I ohms checked it and all was fine, but it still stalled, then i just tapped on it with a screwdriver and she started like a charm. I took it off and cleaned out the carbon build-up and will replace it soon.
just wondering, with the idle/throttle plate stop screw... how did you or whoever was working on the truck re adjust it ... any methods & specs to this would be appreciated... As for gla1967's IAC problem.... been there;done that...
To reset the throttle stop screw, unplug the IAC & start the engine. Then adjust the screw so the engine sputters and dies. When you restart it, it should only run for ~1 1/2 sec before dying again. Plug the IAC back in, clear any codes, and it should be perfect.
The actual Ford procedure that I got from AllData for that particular year was to adjust the throttle closed, adjust the TPS to a specified voltage, and then open the throttle to another specified voltage. It's been so long, though, I can't fully remember it.
