Cam and lifter issue?

Knock on wood I haven't experienced a failure yet but know many have. I've been using the break in additives to the oil to compensate for today's crappy oils. Another problem is what lifters are used, not many made in this country any more, I've seen so called replacements from India and China. I took apart some a friend had bought for his engine and found all kinds of crap inside that looked like sand.
