I have a lazy lifter that taps on start-up. It stops tapping after about 5 seconds. I have no idea which one. I figure I'll change the whole lot.
Question is, when pricing them, they range from around $50 to over $200 (Edelbrock). Why such a spread, and which should I choose and why? It's just a stock engine, nothing fancy or hopped up.

Thanks in advance.
In my opinion its not a good idea to put new lifters on a used cam. I know a lot of people do it, and I have even done it myself and didn't have any problems. But it was on an old solid lifter 223 straight six Ford, and I only drove it about 2000 miles a year after that.
On a DD or something that needs to be reliable you should just put a cam in it with the lifters. Or if you can find out which lifter it is (remove the rocker cover and see which one is loose) just change that one and see how it works.
Are you absolutely certain the problem is a lifter? I only aske because I discovered this interesting tip only recently.
I tend to agree with the idea of avoiding replacing lifters without replacing the cam but then its not my engine.
good stuff, I think a filter change is slightly easier the a cam change or new lifter(s).
BUT, how could it be a cam problem if the tick goes away????? The lifter can't take up THAT much lash, can it? Seriously, it's about 6 total ticks, sometimes louder than other times, occasionally no tick at all.
Try the MC filter (bypass setup is better then some others use), Seafoam never hurts (I have a small amount in my oil right now since I 'foamed in the intake and through the gas tan, put the rest in the crankcase - NOT MUCH). My engine has smoothed slightly, but I don't think I really needed it. I didn't get much smoke at all, compared to the bombouts some people make.
