On the new super dutys, the cluster is lit up in ice blue. I really like blue better then green or orange. Is there any way to convert our clusters to ice blue LED's and get even the MPH needle to be ice blue? Or is this not going to happen....
You could open the cluster and change the light filter to transparent blue and/or paint the bulbs. The needle you can poke around the junk yard and find a clear one, cut it to length and glue it in place. I plan on doing the same thing in red for mine.
Hell ya it is, that would look wicked with a white needle.
Thanks guys for the responses. And yea thats what im thinking Hairy. I wish the blue was a little lighter like cool ice blue the new SD use, but this might just have to do for now
When i looked at the site it looks like there are multiple color options to choose from. I assume its just a filter that goes over a LED light, like the factory setup. In fact, if you used a LED with the stock filter it would probably be ice blue colored, but the yellowish output of the incandescant makes it look blue/green.

I have an extra cluster so im going to get my LED flashlight and shine it from the back and look Ill post it up here right after i do it.
Sure looks good and helps retain the "factory look" but for about $60 for LED's plus shipping, plus painting the needles, I think this is an expensive option. I could be wrong on the bulb type but I think they are 194's and on SuperbrightLED.com these run from $1 to $4 each depending on the configuration. Not sure how many bulbs are in the cluster but I doubt it over 10.
Already heard back. That's pretty good service.
He explained it differently but basically, LEDs are very directional and color specific. Anyone that has replaced their dome light with an LED will know. The bulbs are usually way to blue.
They have done all the research and put together these kits of specific bulbs in specific places. Each bulb is selected for each position according to the properties of each bulb. They supply a schematic that shows exactly where each bulb goes. They said on our trucks it is a big help.
As far as retaining dimmer function, the expensive bulbs work "better". They say that function is "retained". I'm assuming that in the cheap kits the dimmer function doesn't work to well, but that is an educated guess. Edit: Not very educated if you read the inexpensive description again as I did you see they say that you lose dimmer function with the cheap stuff.
I think I'll buy the expensive kit and see what I think.
If you add the price of bulbs up from the online stores and then add in the research done, I'm thinking' they're pretty close on price, although I haven't done the math. Another guess. Close enough for me.
Edit:
Throwing in this email section.
Glad we could help. You are correct, the better kits use brighter bulbs and also work better with the dimmer. The HiPo Elite Series uses the brightest LED bulbs available for cluster install. For a 1974 truck, you would definitely need the diagrams. When you see them, you will understand. Every bulb has a positive and negative side. The bulbs are marked and the diagrams in the instructions show which side of each location is the positive. That will keep you from spending hours of trial and error.
