Tank switching valve question

Tank switching valve question
I am totally embarassed to have to ask this but which tube on the tank switching valve is the feed to the pump and which is the return? When I tore into the top end for my electric fuel conversion I noticed that the return was 5/16 and the feed was 3/8 so I though no problem when I get underneath. Cut the tubes down by the valve and afterwards noticed oops, same size down there thanks to an adapter fitting halfway back, Grrrr.
