my 03 f250 will over heat when going up steep slow hills (15mph tops). my old trans did the same, have a new one and it still overheats without towing anything. is this normal since no air flow? thanks
You can, but that doesn't cool as well as both the radiator and air to oil cooler. I thought we were trying to increase cooling, not reduce cooling.
I purchased a 6.0 cooler and was ready to install it when I noticed that the radiator has no trans cooler in the bottom tank.. P.O. must have swapped out the original for one from a manual trans and ran the lines direct to the cooler. That is why I asked about just a air to oil cooler. I have to make a choice. Install a 6.0 cooler alone. Or replace the radiator along with the cooler.
1999 and the first half of 2000 production did not have a radiator cooler.
The best way would be to replace the radiator with one that has a cooler and add the 6.0L cooler. You might get enough cooling just by replacing the air to oil with the 6.0L cooler. You may want to try that and see if it is enough for you.

Thank you. I will install the cooler and check temps. Question: will a infrared temp tool to the trans pan give a real reading as to the inside lube temps.
I would think an IR temp sensor would give you a very good indication of temps. At least you would have a starting and stoping point to compare. Thats in place of an aftermarket temp gage.

Not really. The return from the the ATF cooler (at rear of tranny) dumps right into the pan. It should be cooler. The line from the tranny to the ATF cooler (toward front of tranny) would be the warmest place to check with an IR temp reader. But just sitting still at idle the temps will be the same without air flow across the cooler.
