Hey guys I was wondering I had to pound the valves out of the head on my 272 and was wondering.should I change the valve guides if so any tips to get them.out as they are pretty rusty and don't want to ruin the heads
Another option would be to have them inserted. First they are drilled to be sure the the hole is centered with the valve seat. Then they are tapped and a bronze insert, think Heilcoil, is threaded into the guide. This is then reamed to give the correct valve stem clearance. Good luck.
Assuming that the heads have never been rebuilt in the past, they will not have removable guides - they are a part of the casting.
You should at least disassemble, clean, and inspect all of the components.
Today's gas can cause valves to stick after sitting only a couple of months. This does not necessarily result in any damage to the head - cleaning, reassembly and new, fresh gas usually fixes it.
If they're just old, history unknown, it's a good time for a rebuild.
Thanks for the 411 sorry took so long.to get back to you my computer is acting crazy so I'm.doing.this from my phone i was thinkin that I could just soak the **** out of them in some oil if I can't get them out how should I clean them up properly so the valves slide in easily I can't afford machine work right now trying to do this myself
