302 or 351c?

I just bought a 65 F-100 SB that has a 351C engine. I also have a 1979 F-100 for the disk brakes and PS. From what I understand the 351C torque curve shows the torque peak is at fairly high RPM's. Good for racing but not so much on the street. Would I be better off replacing the 351 with the 302 as the PS pump is designed for the 302 and the AC compressor if I decide to have AC? I'm just an old man trying to get by.

Rex it all depends on what you want to do with the truck and how much work you want to do to get it there. If your just tooling around town and cruising the 351C will be fine but drink more gas. The PS and AC would be the same just different brackets. The 302 would make extra work for less peak power and torque. You can somewhat reshape the torque curve with the right cam, carb, and intake choices.

If this is a 351C-4V from the early 70's then it is no slouch. I remember a friend with one in a 71 Mustang 4spd. and it was a quick car in stock condition.

Thanks for the info. I guess I'll keep the 351. Will it be hard to find the brackets? Everything older than late 80's is crushed here in Maine.

Rex, Drive the truck this winter when winter weather permits and wait til next summer to make a decision. Let the truck speak to you, you might like it or hate it. This will also give you more time for planning.

My 2 cents, I would be thinking a total 2000ish +/- EFI engine tranny upgrade to try to get better fuel mileage.
