I am wanting to build up a small block to put in a 92 f150 4x4. I will be upgrading it to mass-air. I would like to know some of the pro's and con's of the 302 and 351 . I am looking for tourqe more than hi-end power
The 302 has little torque down low where it sounds like you want it. I don't think you'll be happy with it in a one ton unless you have really tall gears.
351 by nature of its longer stroke is the better choice for torque.
351 would be the engine of choice, no replacement for displacement. The 302 is a good engine but I don't think it's a very good truck engine the way it was installed from the factory. It has very poor low end torque. I do like my engine as I did buy it, but in the future I will be building my own 400 horse 351 and replacing my wimpy 302. You can build the 302 to be nicely fit in a truck and have the low end power, but the 351 would be better for the same money. And as stated above, it has a long stroke which is where your torque comes from.
As the others have said, the 302 can't hold a candle to the 351W when it comes to bottom-end torque. You can build a 302-based 347ci stroker to gain back some of the difference; but a 393ci 351W stroker is actually cheaper to build as you can use the stock rods and inexpensive 302 pistons. The 393 doesn't have the oil control problem that the 347 has and probably has a longer life expectancy.
thanks , everyone for your replies.
Hey Quantrex, do you know where I could find some more info on building a strker 351 ? that sounds like the way I should go
