So we've got about 7 inches of snow and it's still coming down... had to run to town today and since my rear tires are almost completely smooth I ran in 4x4. Couldn't go much over 40 anyway cause the roads haven't been plowed yet. Anyway, I could hear the loud noise the whole time and when I got out in town the hub was definitely not hot... Still haven't torn it open, though. Can't afford the rebuild kit right now. It'll have to wait till next month.
Ok, here's an update... originally the hubs would release when I came to a complete stop, but still in drive. Then it required shifting to neutral. As of today, I now have to actually move in reverse to get them to release. I also tried switching the hubs from locked to auto, but no difference. Also, the vibration has gotten worse to the point where I can actually feel something in the steering wheel, and the truck feels like it has lost power (has to work harder) to go forward... definitely something wrong. I've not had a chance to do any of the diagnostic stuff y'all suggested yet due to snow and almost constant plowing, but now that I'm caught up and it's stopped snowing I'm gonna try checking some things out tomorrow. Any further suggestions are welcome. Thanks!
Another update: When I first bought this truck (and with my last truck, too) there was no sound to indicate that I had entered 4x4 when using the ESOF... just better traction indicated I had. Now I've got a distinct clunk from my front left wheel when I enter 4x4. Does that help narrow down the bad part at all?
Hello Dave , sounds kinda like the hub spring that makes the gear lock/unlock, thou Im not shur if they are like the warn hubs, you may want to google a pic unless ,or I'm shur some one will have that diagrame of your hub , Just a thought, there was a few pieces in there that could snap or just simply ware out in time rust would be on culprit if hub wasent sealed back right .
I wasn't able to buy 4 tires at once, so I've been replacing them one at a time... Finally got my tax return, which gave me enough money to tackle the problem in that front hub... took it into the shop to get them to diagnose it so I'd know exactly what to fix, and after working on it for a while, they told me it was due to having mismatched tire sizes (all the same tire, but not all the same age, so tread depth gave me about a 1" difference in tire size). Said on 4x4 vehicles all the tires have to be EXACTLY the same size, or that can happen... sure enough, got my last tire in and installed this morning, and the problem is gone. How crazy is that???
Glad to here the good news dave, I have done that in the past, but try to keep all new and same size now with hauling diff loads I need the higher rateing of tire, even thou the ride empty is a little rough most of the time I have some kind of trailer or machine in the bed.keep an eye on those bearings
