i have a 2000 ford f-350 w/ 256,000 on her and whenever i drive down the road the front drive side hub pops real bad and loud but if i stop and lock the hubs in i don't hear it what so ever......i'm sure somebodyelse has had this problem before but i couldn't find it anywhere. but i was just wondering if it could be anything else before i go and replace the hubs.
I wonder if it is popping because it is not disengaging completely. My left hub did that and was making a popping/loud clicking noise about a year or so ago. I took it completely apart, cleaned it all up, re-lubed everything and put it back together and it hasn't done it since.
that sounds just like what mine is doing its been doin it for prolly 2 weeks and just figured out where it was coming from. well i guess i'll try that rather then sending a couple bills on new ones first. but if anybody else has any other in put about what else it might be if not that thank you
Take the hub off and then with it unlocked stick your fingers into the splined hole and spin the hub around the bearing and see if it catches. If it does then you've found the problem. That's how I found mine.
The inner axleshaft bearings (B2110) at any parts store are only around $10, so I would just replace them if you tear into your hubs.
There is another unusual problem that I actually had on my passenger side.
My hub assembly and inner axle bearings were fine but I still had a clicking/rattle on my passenger side when driving over bumps. Sounded kinda like a rattling brake pad amplified (if that make any sense). When you tear down your 4x4 locking hub, look at the plastic/nylon piece at the bottom. See if there are two little rub marks about 1/16" to 1/8" in diameter like this:
thanks alot guys i looked into it yesterday and foud that my bearing was shot...... put a new one in and fixed the problem after i heard it might be a bearing i was affraid it might have got hot and messed the hole front end up but i guess i got lucky
