Problem with lights

Hey all,

I've run into a bit of a problem with my lights. Help would be appreciated!

Play by play:
-A couple weeks ago I had a turn signal light (the one on the side of the truck) go out.
-Yesterday the turn signal started blinking really fast. I figured I blew another light, so I replaced the bulbs.
-Now when I try the turn signal, it doesn't blink, it just stays lighted. Emergency flashers work fine.
-Another problem: My rear running lights don't work. When the headlights are on, no running lights in the rear. The brake lights still work.

I've checked all the bulbs and they look good. The fuses look good too.

Any ideas?

Sounds like you need to replace the flasher relay for turn signals(different from emergency flasher). That should take care of the non blinking issue.

As for rear lights? Are the bulbs good? Did they work fine before you changed the bulbs due to malfunctioning turn signals?
Do you have functioning license plate lights? They are on the same circuit, so if the license plate lights work, then it's the rear bulbs/sockets.

Where is the turn signal flasher located? I see the emergency flasher.

License plate light is good. I did replace one of the rear bulbs just as a test, and it didn't make a difference. What can go bad with the sockets?

You may have some grounding issues as well.

Isn't the turn signal flasher hanging on a clip under the dash, around the steering column bracing? Been a longgg time since I changed mine.

If your license plate light works, then you need to inspect your rear bulbs and sockets. The sockets ground through the bed(since they are screwed down to it), so there should not be an issue there. I have a hard time believing both sockets failed at the same time. They are spring loaded, if they get gunked up, they stick and won't make good contact with the bulb points.

Did they work before you started on the previous issue?

Got the new flasher, and that took care of the signals. Looks like I do have a grounding issue to blame for the other lights. Thanks for your help gentlemen.

If you have a test light you can check for power at the sockets and check to see if you have adequate ground as well. Have power at the sockets but none with the bulbs in? Bad ground. No power? You may have an open. Mice are famous for chewing wires in to. Or with wires that old they may be cracked and broken. Check the connections for corrosion. The main connection that feeds the rear is near the brake proportioning valve. If your brake lights work, it shouldn't be a grounding issue. Let us know what you find.
