I have a 2002 f250 7.3l and for about six months my battery light had been off and on....not so much when its hot outside more so on colder days....but as of a couple weeks ago my batteries finally crapped out...bought 2 new batteries and truck fired up quick and fast....my alternator is brand new i replaced it before i replaced my batteries....batteries and alternator are both working great or so says the volt meter....my problem is the battery light is still on....BUT! If i drive for 15-20 minutes down the hwy the battery light goes off....after setting all night the battery light will be back on....when i rev my motor the battery light will flicker on and off....ive also change all battery cable connectors(no corrosion)...checked wires that hook to alternator and no bare wires there....i tried following the wires but motor area is too congested so i only saw the wires were they plug into alternator....what the hell is going on?!?!?
Two things come to mind...First is the voltage regulator in the alternator is bad or that the ground is flakey. When the alternator light is flickering, what is the voltage output of the alternator?
I have no idea....oreillys hooked there machine up to my truck....with truck off batteries were excellent(i hope so they are brand new) and with truck running they just said alternator was running perfect...
You can get a cheap voltage meter which plugs into the cigarette lighter either at Walmart or Harbor Freight (of course you can just use a handheld voltage meter too). My guess is that the regulator is flakey. Did you use an O'Reilly's rebuilt alternator (say cheap Chinese junk rebuild)? If so, I'd bet the alternator is intermittent due to the internal voltage regulator being bad.
You need a DMM (digital multimeter) with an Ohms setting to check the grounds.
Regardless, you need to check the voltage output while the battery light is on and when it is off. If you can't do this you need to have an auto electric shop check it out when the light is on
