I was hunting with my buddy who has an 09 Cummins and he was tellin me about removing the silencer ring on his turbo and said I should do the same. Does the 6.0 have this part and if so what can I realistically gain from removing it?
The 03 turbo has a removable ring that can be pryed out, the 04-07 turbo ring has to be machined out. The only gain will be a slight increase in whistle coming from the compressor wheel, IMO really not worth the hassle. The 03 turbo gets the loud whistle from the turbine (exhaust) side, remove the kitty and muffler, then you'll have more whistle than the Cumapart.
Gotcha, ok my buddy made it sound like it might make the turbo work better. If it just makes it louder I might just do it when I start doing an EGR delete.
You have other things going on then, dirty unison ring perhaps, leaking charge air boot. Time to crawl under the hood and have a look around. Visit the Tech folder at the top of this forum.
It would be fair to say your turbo needs a little attention.
Good to go, looking up videos on how to get that done now. For someone who's never messed with a turbo before how long should it take to remove the turbo, clean it, and get my truck back up and running?
Edit* - Also, I will be using hand tools only, a 3m pad and some CLP gun cleaner

Hahahahahha... well let me say this, it will go better the next time. That one bolt (03 exclusive) behind the turbo is a pita until you do it once. Do read plenty and a few tools help. Swivel flex heads are nice.
Turbo down pipe helpful tip of the day: Once you loosen the bolt, the clamp stays tight, crawl under the truck and kick the sucker.
