South Tx Mini Tech Day
only minor scrapes and light profanity grease was necessary to get everything to cooperate.
i was actually kind of spooked that after i installed the new seals on my drain valve, i could not get it to seal quite right. was really worried that it was going to just let pressure run off out the drain hose through the drain valve. it turns out that it wont really seal all the way until you get it wrenched back in place. so just throwing that out there for anyone who reads and does a fuel bowl rebuild... dont be freaked out if you can blow through the closed valve with the new seals in place.
the next most troubling issue we ran into was getting the aux fuel port plugs off Ted's heads. started with the back one and it just seemed to want to round off with the wrenches we had available. thinking i might get one of those sets from craftsman that work on everything.... my dogbone like that fits them beautifully, but wont fit with the turbo in place.
so we opted to wait on his FRx until we tackle the up pipe instal and turbo mini refresh (just needs a new compressor housing oring). while its out we will have room to get all our fancy sockets in there and get at it.
after i got motorbug all buttoned back up i realized i needed to make a run to the convenience store for a fresh pack of death nails. motorbug fired up immediately and seemed like everything was good to go until she reached operating temp and was gutless as hell.
pulled into a driveway and flipped around... backed in to my driveway and popped the hood...
when i reinserted my intercooler output tube... i pulled the hose to my map-boost gauge apart inadvertently. reattached... happy truck.
Ted seemed to really like that when WOT with the 10k switched on... pushing 22-23psi boost at 85 we barely saw 1000* on the pyro.
happy truck.
Ted's truck took a little more time being the first time it had been apart since it was put together at the factory. we had a few issues where bolts didnt want to go back into their homes... but got them settled back in... until the most major headache Ted mentioned in his simple green bath thread. the fuel output to the heads, rear fitting (cant remember wether its pass line or drivers side) all but refused to go back into its home.
again... just for reference here... but.
when disconnecting the fuel lines from the fuel bowl... do your absolute best to go ahead and separate the two halves of the fitting, leaving the threaded nipple in the fuel bowl. it will make for a much less maddening reassembly. go ahead and change out the fuel line orings while they are easy to get at.
we did find copious amounts of oil inside the top of the connector of the icp, and it does continuously throw the icp signal low code. im leaning to that being the cause of the stalls last night and this morning.
and to recap on what we have learned about stealerships...
in the last week at the major dealer here in victoria...
they wanted 300$+ for a new 4x4 hub clip (because they make you buy a whole new hub kit)
they wanted 600$ for a new rabs unit for a 92 f250 with an idi in it.
and they didnt even offer Ted lubrication when they got 180$ out of him for a new icp.
even with the icp issues... went for a ride around the block and my seat of the pants meter was in the green. mostly happy truck! and it still almost irritates me that Ted's truck is quieter than motorbug without any of the fuel mods done yet. pms at its finest lol!

I must get better at estimating the time it will take to accomplish tasks in the manner we tackled them. i definitely noticed that i work at a completely different pace working with someone vs. by my lonesome.
we did not get to the valve covers this day... but there will be many other i hope. because its just no fun unless your getting dirty
If you are up for a multiple day truck day. I will order the Up-pipes and other stuff necessary to do up pipes, turbo, and the VC's, probably be a January weekend job though. Might even look at HPX at the same time.
not many things make me happier than turning wrenches on trucks.
it would be a wonderful dream to spend my days working on these trucks exclusively and be that my "job". i would never retire.
