Was wondering what the life expectancy of the Bronco's dual in-line cats'. are? My '91 XLT has 130k and I'm thinking they are close to shot. I'd like to cut them both out and replace with a hi-flow cat.(EPA approved,of course).Other than materials used, what
makes one brand better than another?I think with my K&N filter
and Flowmaster exhaust, she'll run alot stronger with a hi-flow cat.
Thanks
Have you thought about swapping to a high flow Y pipe with cat? I have one on my 96. It would compliment that flowmaster exhaust you have. Instead of just freeing up some power with the higher flowing catalytic, youre exhaust wouldnt get bottle necked from the manifolds to the cat, then from the cat to the catback. I dont know who manufacturers cats. Have you tried the exhaust forum?
Yes, you can use the stock manifolds with this pipe. You just need a special donut gasket. What is the size of the piping on your flowmaster exhaust where its connected to the cat? This high flow Bassani unit is 3" (its a true 3" in and out high flow cat unit). Also, is your catback a flange mount, or a slip mount? The Bassani is a slip style. It is a great addition to any bronco. I have their complete system on my truck. Its all stainless so it will last a LONG time, and the quality is the best I have seen out of any exhaust manufacturer.
Thanks Rich,
Checked out the site and the unit looks sweet!Looks like in the pic
that there are two pipes with two cats, one on top of the other. Is
this correct and/or necessary? Why can't I just remove my inline 2 and replace with 1?Is this an E.P.A. thing?Or do you get better flow with 2 single units than 2 pipes going into 1 cat.?
I had sent that link to someone else a few weeks back, and they had the same kind of question. I believe that photo was taken on a highly reflective surface, and thats just a photographic anomaly. Plus, its just a generic photo. The unit from Bassani is one pipe, with one cat.
It sure looks like that picture shows 2 cats. Besides, the description says you can get an off-road version without cats or a "with cats" version. They don't say with "cat", but with "cats". Interesting...
Well the picture does say 'Image is a representation of this part. Actual part may vary'. So yes, I guess it might be a two cat unit. I think the air injection tube makes it look bigger than it is. I know mine doesnt have that tube. AFAIK, Bassani uses a single cat to replace a dual cat.
Those of you that have the basssani y pipe and cat, does it have the air tube into the cat. I will not pass emiissions without one and and looking for a high flow cat. Also, from what everyone has said on this forum and the guy that does my emissions check, the first cat looking part in the exhaust is just a expansion chamber and is not a cat. He told me their computer states one cat only.

My 96 does not have the air injection tube, but I believe Greystreak92's does. Yes, there is only one cat stock, and one cat on the replacement Bassani unit.
My Bassani Y-pipe has the O2 sensor bung and the CAT has the air injection tube. The tube runs directly to the cat. not the Y-pipe to introduce fresh air into it and help it heat up. The catalytic converter MUST have this air injection or it will not function properly. I'll try to get a photo of mine posted here shortly....I agree with Rich completely...dollar for dollar, the BEST investment I've made for the Bronco.
My bronco does have two cats. I bought a highflow cat with my flowmaster and had to take it back. I wanted two have three inch pipe from the y back but because of the two cats I gave up.
My muffler guy said he has never seen a bronco with two cats. He did say it was that way on some of the trucks but that this was the first bronco. He told me mine must have been a late 96. I ended up just going three inch from the cat back to my flowmaster and three inch out from there.
