So I skipped the 87 tune and went right from stock to the 93 this morning. All I can say is, it's GREAT to have my gas pedal back. I've hated the drive by wire system on this truck since I got it, and this tuner mitigates ALL of the delay. I step on the gas and the damn thing just goes. And holy crap does it go. I like the shift strategies so far too, although I only have a few miles on the tune.
Will report back when I get some miles on it but so far I'm very satisfied.
I received the tuner in about 3 days. Went with the 87 Economy, 87 Tow and 91 Tow after speaking with Mike. Seems that will be a good fit for my personal needs. Loaded without any challenges. Fast and easy process. I gave all of the info requested on the order form so I was confident in the tunes and the accuracy of the loads. Loaded the economy first and took the first trip in it yesterday. Already seeing better mileage. Also added a soft tonneau cover so the combination has given me a lot better highway mileage. Next week I'll load the tow tune and go get a new fifth wheel trailer.
As for the tuner and 5 Star's service and advice, I'd like to give them both 5 stars.<O

Reason: typo
I actually had this very same question that I emailed 5 star about. No changes in the towing capacity with the 93 tune as long as you're using 93 octane.
are you really positive pulling fifth wheel or travel trailer 11k for 2000 miles and found 93 octane everywhere on the road,or backing off on 87 per/tow.i anderstand very, very well 93per/tow for fun and i am going to try that one of these days.
If I was pulling 11k for 2000 miles, I wouldn't be dropping in 93 octane, would cost too much...
From the way I read the question was is the 93 gas at every gas station.
The cost of the 93 would be more my issue, which is why I stuck with only 87 tunes. I would like to hear if there is a noticable difference in the 87 and 93 tunes. I think you said you have the 87 tow, it's not that much different then the performance tune, in the way the truck reacts to the gas pedal, shifts seem to be different. I also don't use the tow/haul mode with the 87 tow tune, just lock out 6th gear when not on the highway.
That was my intent when I asked 5 star that question. The next Ohio meet, I'd like to try and coordinate a run with 87 and another with the 93 (after filling up with 93). That would be the best comparable tow test for me. My truck doesn't even feel my tandem axle trailer, even with 4 atv's and my dirt bike on it, it's not heavy enough.
According to the dyno charts, there's about 10hp difference between the 87/93 tunes, which I don't think anyone would be able to feel in the seat. All I know is, I'm absolutely thrilled with the throttle response now, such a huge difference over stock.
By the way, the 87 perf/tow are one tune, at least that's how I got mine (and how they're labeled on the 5 Star site).
Havin' a good time with the 93 tune so far! This is mostly city (non-stop hills, tons of stop and go with a max speed of about 45), had a 40 mile turnpike trip yesterday that brought it up from 8.0 to 8.3. I've hand calc'ed against the MTE display and it's pretty accurate. On my second tank now, truck feels like a whole new animal. I'm going to stick with the 93 for this tank and then decide which 87 tune to run...
For those who are perceptive to things not making sense in pics, I was filling up when I snapped the pic, that's why my gas gauge is just over a 1/4 with 30 gallons used...
I think I am putting my tow tune back on for a while. Just towed a trailer and golf cart weighing about 3000 lbs, what a dog with the economy tune. Forgot to change it before heading north for the weekend but will be on for the drive home. The lower range is much more responsive with the tunes and gets you going much better.
