The out come is a new long block is needed. Bore scope showed scoring on the cylinder wall and imprints of the valves on the piston.
Now to find a good long block. I've spoke to Asheville Engines. Nice guy, was real helpful early on with suggestions. He didn't just try to sell me an engine right from the start.
I've seen where Blackwater and J an K sell reman long blocks too.
Any other places I might want to look? I'm not looking for a junkyard motor.
At Asheville, I can get a longblock with ARP studs bored 30 over for around $7000. Standard bore for around $6200 with ARP.
The others I mentioned are comparable on prices with the additons of the ARP studs. I haven't seen or spoke to them about a 30 over engine.
Asheville tells me that the 30 over will get 15-18% more HP and torque. Seem like the way to go if I'm gonna replace the engine. I'm gonna go ahead and do the EGR delete as well while the engine is out.
If you get one built, I'd look into several performance mods.
-Full EGR delete
-head studs, factory head gaskets
-Intake elbow without the valve or whatever it is, some kind of emission EGR mixer thinger.
-6.0 exhuast manifolds maybe, reading req'd..
Thats all I can think of right this second... but hey, if you're gonna build from scratch, might as well do it right!
You might as well get a camper installed in the box too, cause thats where you'll be livin when you're other half catches wind of you're plans
Not after any huge gains. Just want it back on the road. I'm never gonna be hooking to a sled with it. I am doing the full EGR delete before the new motor goes in. I ended up picking one up from J&K engines. He had 2 ready to go. Bored 20 over, complete EGR delete, ARP studs, new low pressure oil pump, gasket kit for upper end. All for a bit under 7K. Seems like I'm forgeting something else too, but I think I'll be pleased.
Something to do with the 6.4 exhaust manifolds or pipes being thin and once in a while bursting a hole.
I see..... I was dropping off some additional goodies to the shop earlier this week and another 6.4 came in with a hole in one of the up pipes. We'll be looking closely at mine while they are out. May get replaced as well. Looking at how they are designed, with the pipe leading over to the EGR, I wonder if one couldn't do a custom set of pipes to get rid of some of the unused piping.
The 6.4 manifolds are very restrictive compared to the 6.0. If you look at your driver side, its practically smashed flat so the egr cooler will fit on top of it.
