Engine rebuild

It sounds like I need to rebuild my 79 400CI. I have never done a rebuild before. I have removed and replaced heads for a valve job on an old 302 before before, but thats about as far as I have gone. I plan on having the heads done on my 400. I was wondereing what else I neet to do for a simple rebuild... nothing fancy. The engine currently has 160,000 on it and is leaking large quanities of oil out the exhaust. Also, does anyone recommend a good book to follow for the rebuild process? Brand of Rebuild Kit?

Thanks
Wrecker

Well, I recommend taking the block to a machinist. Get it checked out do that with ANY block, even a new one.

Engine rebuild

My buddy recomended this place to me,
ALL ENGINE, http://www.allautoengines.com
I know they sell gaket rebuild sets. I purchased an engine from them, great price and couldn't have asked for anything better. I recomend them to everyone. I have never heard anything negative about their products and I know I have no complaints. You might want to check them out if your looking to save $$ but not jeaporadize quality.

Get a Hanes overhaul manual for your truck. They are easy to follow and cover everything. Most parts stores have them.

You'll need a good torque wrench, an engine hoist, an engine stand, ring compressor, harmonic balancer puller in additon to an engine rebuild manual. Go to Books a million, Barnes & Noble , ect and look thru the automotive section , there's usually severl different engine rebuild manuals. One that comes to mind is How To Rebuild Big ( and small) Block Fords. I think it's got more info than the Haynes manual.

One other option that comes to mind is considering buying a factory rebuilt short block and haveing a local machine shop re-do your heads. You will still need most of the tools I listed but the short block will already be done. All that I recomend when buying one is to check behind the workmanship ( torque values mainly) and the qualiy of the parts used. I bought a 5.0 short block for $340 and it needed a better timing set, I swapped the cam out for a hotter one, and I also replaced the rod bolts for some ARP's. After running it for over a year now in a 89 Ranger with a 4 speed, and it's never been pampered, it's held up just fine.
