How mnay miles on a 7.3 is to many to purchase? I am looking at a 2000 73 that is very clean with 270k miles... In my mind, the engine may be fine, but the trans is lkely near the end of its life and as 'bulletproof' as these engine are, there still may be issues arising on some parts with these miles. The seller is asking $8900... and overall, the rig is very very clean limited...
What do you think? is 270k miles too much for a firstr Ex purchase?
It all depend on what kind of live it's had. Father-in-law's friend has a 01 Crew Cab with 325k on it - never rebuilt the tranny once. He's owned it since new. It's had injector work and a couple CPS replacements, but overall it's still a great runner. Of course...he's never towed and only used it as a residential hauler.
Just one perspective, I suppose.
There are lower mileage ones out there...you just have to be willing to drive to get them! (and of course pay the premium)

x2. I found a '05 Limited Ex with "only" 62k miles.
Looked like it was used on a farm - rear and 2nd row floor had water
stains, 2nd row seat backs torn, rear hatch opening scratched/scraped.
I bought an '05 Ex with 98k - interior looked brand-new.
Driver's seat leather was NEW.
So, it's all about condition vs. # of miles.
With low mileage vehicles that are 10+ years old...
it's important to know WHY is was used so little? is there a problem?
or just a 3rd/4th vehicle that was under-utilized....
$8900 may be a fair price for it based on the fact that it has almost 300k on the clock. I would look for something that was lower mileage and a higher price tag unless I knew more about the vehicle, the owner, the maintenance, etc. I just don't like the idea of forking over almost 10k for a 300k truck when I know for $11-$15 you can get one with 100-150k and possibly 2-4 years newer. Just my 2 cents worth, and my humble opinion.
You never know. There may be more details that he doesn't have listed. He could have already done some major component overhauls that would warrant the price. If the body and chassis look like it has 50k on it and the drivetrain has been updated it could be a win for that price.
I paid 7,200 for my ex in sig. It was completely stock when I got it with 261,000 miles on it. One owner well cared for truck. No rips or tears in any leather, but had all the " usual" wear that reflected the mileage. Take a very close look at evetuthing. Mine needed injectors I later found out it needed rear end bearings and other little things that wear with the mileage and years. Find a good diesel shop and take it there. Even if it costs 100.00 and it turns out to need more its wall spent. For a clean truck I think in the low 8's is fair.

Yea... that is pretty good advice Big Red... The 7.3 reputaation tends to drive the price up... problem is that there is a lot more to a truck than just the engine...
