ok about three mouths ago my np205 case cracked and went south, so i have a 1985 f250 light duty with 351w and c6 so i went and priced a used np205 and it was like $425 at a local junk yard so i did go with that, so i bought my buddys 1980 f350 ttb single cab with a blowen 351m, c6 and 13-45 borg for $150 so i swaped the t-cases and been driving it and it ten times better but i dont know if it has netural or 4 low if you have any idea plz reply thank u
The Borg Warner 1345 has a low and a nuetral postion. With the shift lever pushed all the way forward (toward dash) the transfer case is in 2WD, pull back one postion it is in 4WD-Hi, pull back again it is in Neutral, one more pull puts it in 4WD-Lo.
Note to go into 4WD-LO, the vehcile should be stopped, hubs locked in, and transmission put in neutral.
FWIW, the NP205 was dropped after 1979. If you managed to crack one of those, you must have dropped your truck on a rock that was magically shaped to hit only your transfer case. The NP205 featured a one-piece cast iron case, so it's one of the strongest (and heaviest) transfer cases ever made.
You probably had an NP208. The NP208 is light weight aluminum, and very susceptible to cracking.
As for the BW1345, those were pretty rare in our trucks, especially in a 1980. BorgWarner didn't see much use until the mid 80's.
Note to go into 4WD-LO, the vehcile should be stopped, hubs locked in, and transmission put in neutral.
because he's in an automatic, it would be best to have the tranny in park and the vehicle on a slight hill. in neutral, the tranny output shaft will want to spin, so unless you slam the shifter from 4hi to 4lo, you'll grind the gears trying to get the shaft to stop again. we used to have this problem in a jeep we used to have. having the vehicle on a slight hill helps because sometimes the gears don't want to line up until you roll an inch or two.
also note that with the hubs locked, you can shift between 2hi and 4hi at any speed, as long as you aren't slipping your tires at the time. don't try it with the hubs unlocked unless stopped.
also note that you may put the t-case in 4-lo with the hubs unlocked, if you want the lower gears in 2wd for backing a trailer into a tight space or whatever.
Since that's a little bit later transfer case(I can't keep all the numbers straight) you might need to pull the shifter to your leg before you try and go to neutral and low. The 208 just pulls straight back in a straight line.
franklin, i know thats not the case in the BW case in my 83 F250, nor in the NP208 that was in the 86 F150 i used to have, i don't know when they started making the shifters that way - but i guess it wouldn't hurt for the OP to try it
