hi. checked compression on my 93 explorer limited and got 170lbs on 4 clyinders, and 160 on rear cylinders. is this good or bad? can anyone tell me if it's time to rebuild, or maby a valve job. runs pretty good but get a little hot when towing my 16 ft. boat. it starts hard, and runs bad for a while, after unloading boat. temp guage does not get in the red, but you can feel and smell the heat from the front of the vehicle. and it doesn't seem to boil over. i checked plugs, they all are on the white side. is this an indication of running hot? thank's for any help you may give me. bob.
yes i have new thermostat, new coolant, no clutch fan, coverted to 2 stage electric. boat is very small and light. today i tore down the top of motor, and found a gasket out of place on the intake, i think that will cure the rough idle, but i don't think it will cure the heat problem. i put the thermostat in hot water, it opens just fine. i think while i have it torn down, i'll do a valve job. put it together and see what happens. thank's for your reply. i appreciate it. bob.
The white plug tips were an indicator of lean running, this in turn causes hot burn...
Does your CEL not work??
Why did you not use an IR gun to check temps ??
Connect a LIVE DATA SCANNER, and do a diagnostic scan...
I think you are wasting $$$ and time tearing heads off without further diagnostics...... Philip
hi aquanaut20, just read your thread on my 4.0. great stuff. a freind of mine told me the same thing, that a vacuum leak can cause it to run lean, and hot. i think tommorrow i will put it back together and see how it runs. i don't know much about the testing things you are suggesting. cel,ir,and so on, but i can find out. thank's a lot, i think you have saved me some money.
hi, well i put my 4.0 back together, without taking the heads off. after finding a bad gasket on the intake. it now runs really good, and i don't feel the heat, when walking by the front end of the car, like i use to.the final test will be when i pull the boat again. i wan't to than'k everyone that replied to my thread. it's hard to believe that a vacuum leak, can cause this overheating. i hope this maby will help someone else out there, with a similar problem. bob.
