My driver side power window on my '05 super crew f150 has stopped working. It rolled down maybe 3-4 inches or so and the stopped working and now will not go up or down. All of the other windows/locks/mirrors on the main switch work so I'm not sure if I should start with replacing the motor or try the switch first.
I'm new to the forum and never had this problem before so any help is appreciated.
These trucks are prone to switch and regulator problems. I would get a multimeter and start testing before spending any $. If the switch is bad you can buy some time by cleaning the contacts. The rest of your possible problems will need parts replacements.
Should I just check for continuity when he switch is pushed in or is there something else I'm looking for? I am not a car mechanic by any means outside of doing routine maintenance (oil, brakes, filters, etc...) but I am mechanically inclined so I can be taught just about anything. And I'm guessing ill need to take the switch box apart to clean the contacts on that individual switch won't I?
Check for power to the switch, then power out of the switch, and then finally power to the motor.if the power stops anywhere on that path then you found your problem. If the power makes it to the motor then that is likely your culprit and not the wiring or switch.
Yes, you will need to tear down the switch box to clean the contacts. Very simple and straight forward to get at the guts. Then use a pencil eraser to clean the contacts
