04 expedition transmission problem

I'm hoping someone can shed some light for me. I have a 04 Expedition with what I believe is the 4R70W transmission, 4x4 with 5.4 motor. the other day, put vehicle into drive and engine revved up then jumped into 1st gear. After about a day of this, now it wont go into any forward gears, only reverse. In drive, it barely moves at all. Checked fluid, full but looks a bit dirty. pulled into garage, put up in jacks and dropped pan, pulled filter. There was a plastic part in the pan, round ball like with o-ring on it and a plastic stem like a round sucker stick sticking out if it about 1/2 inch long. i was going to remove trans and have it rebuilt, but i thought i should try some simple stuff first! does this sound like its rebuild time? not sure why this part was in pan!
I have used this forum before with great results when working on my 06 f-350 dually and 00 F-53 chassis motorhome!

That sounds like the assembly plug which gets knocked into the pan when the vehicle is assembled. That would suggest the pan has never been dropped or the filter changed. How many miles?

Yikes. That's a long long time. The service interval is every 30k. Best you can hope to do is a change and clean the filter and see what happens. Make sure you use a procedure that swaps all the fluid, not just part of it. You saved a little on the service over the years but it may be coming back to haunt you now.
