My truck is eating starters at a average of one for 10K mi. I was wondering if anyone else is seeing this. So far they have all been under warrenty. Most of my driving is 50 to 100 miles at a time. There is not alot of starts and stops.
Never heard of it. I have 134,000 miles on my starter, it doesn't get used much because the engine is always running, but I've never heard of anyone else having this issue.
I used to have a GMC Jimmy that would trash starters every 20-30,000 miles. A friend told me about a shim kit they sell at the Checker Auto store. I bought it and put in a couple shims and drove it for another 20-30,000 miles without a problem. Then I traded it in so I'm not sure if it fixed it or not. I don't know if you can/should shim the starters on these trucks or not.
I always get the off the wall issues. It could be much worse. As far as the shim kit that makes sense. The starter in it now sounds different from the origional. It sounds like it will not dissengage following a startup and now is grinding every few starts as well. Thanks for the responses guys!
That sounds like it could be an electronics problem. That would explain why so many starters. I don't know if the starter uses a timed relay or some kind of pressure sensor but it sounds like power is not being cut after the truck starts.
