what is the starter life in 7.3L Powerstroke?
Our work truck is a 2002 7.3L Powerstroke F250. It has just over 100,000 miles on it. After 50,000 miles, the starter went out. After 100,000 miles, the starter went out again. Is 50k miles the typical lifespan of these powerstroke starters? Coincidentally, both times the starters went out immediately following an engine oil change (a different lube shop each time).

Sounds like we've been dying young
Thanks for the replies. So far it looks like 50k is pretty shortlived, but that's two in a row for us right at 50k. The truck sees alot of freeway miles, mostly towing a double axle trailer (not that loaded). Drives year round, from below zero in the winter to 90 or 100 degree summer heat. Oil changes very regularly with dino oil. Transmission and diffs running synthetic. I don't think it sees excessive starting for the number of miles on it. Any ideas on the short lifespans?
Thanks
Thanks

Come to think of it, I guess the truck does do quite a bit of starting for the number of miles on it. Sometimes 10-15 times per day. It just seems so coincidental that they both crapped out right around 50,000 miles.

I have a 01 7.3 and the Visteon starter went out around 74000 miles. I posted about ford starters some time ago about how ford decided to make there own in the 2001 year and went with a 2 bolt while all aftermarket (as far as i know and at the time) were 3 bolt. If it wernt for the solenoid go'n out, I think it would of been a good little starter.

If you bought a remanufactured starter then dont expect it to last forever. I got one from zone and it lasted 2 weeks. I got another and it lasted about a month. I then returned it and got one from advance and it lasted quite a while but 2 weeks ago it started turning over slower and had to get another one. Im just surprised how small the starters are for the PowerStroke compared to the old 6.9 which was big and heavy. Also if your starter is not turning over fast enough it makes the truck harder to start.

Also some added wear may be the fact that it is a work truck and some employees may not take care of it the way youwould or the way they would care for their own truck. Just a thought, assuming that you have employees driving it.
The other thought you already answered with the multiple starts a day.

The usage on the truck varies, but on average it goes out every other week. On the weeks it is out, it may see an unusually high number of starts per day. But on the weeks where it is not out, it is parked.
