02 Ford Explorer Governor

Have a friend who has a teenage son with a lead foot and he wanted to know if there was a way to lower the speed limit that the governor kicks in on his 02 Ford Explorer 4.0? So I've looked around and can only find how to remove it. Thought i would give you guys a shot since I use this site all the time to help fix 7.3 & 6.0 diesel.

Thanks in advance for the help!!!

Easiest and cheapest....... 2x4 under gas pedal....

There is also a tracker/recording unit that plugs into the OBDII port, records driving conditions (speed, shift patterns...) or GPS based Parents use technology to monitor teen drivers .. Philip

No just any info on the subject cause I've never heard of someone wanting to turn down the gov. At least not on a Explorer so i wasn't sure if it was even possible.

thinking it's the same principle as my dad's cat diesel, the dealer should be able to turn it down. it will just be limited for everyone

Yea only his son drives it so that's no problem. I was just thinking there might be a way me and him can do it.

The problem with rigging anything up to limit throttle travel as opposed to the electronic speed limiter is the safety aspect. What if he were merging in to traffic at a blind intersection, then all of a sudden a speeding vehicle appeared and his only option for safety was to aggressively accelerate across the intersection. If throttle travel were limited, he'd be out of luck.

Aftermarket tuners will often allow the owner to disable the speed limiter, but I'm not aware of any that will allow the speed limiter to be lowered. I doubt if the dealer can even do this.

There are places such as Davis Electronics (and I'm sure others) that make fleet monitoring and tracking devices that will datalog the driver's trips via the OBD-II to be downloaded later. Unless the kid has no clue where the OBD-II port is though, this could be easily removed for portions of the drive. However, the device datalogs connections and disconnections which are different from the engine being started and stopped.

I've also read of some devices that incorporate GPS and you can monitor them real time via a website or that will even send you a text if the vehicle exceeds a preset speed on certain stretches of road. I'm sure these types of devices also come with a monthly or annual service contract though.

Some of the newer Fords have what's called "My Key" where you can set lower speed limiters for specific keys, and those settings can only be altered by an Admin Key (which would be the parent's key). Buying a newer vehicle is probably not an option for the son, but just something to be aware of.

Hi ROD, you are correct, the 2x4 comment was made "tongue in cheek"

The OBDII DATA logging devices work well and data can be downloaded into a pc, They also record disconnection...

If I was using such a device with my child any deviation from an agreed use would effectively cancel that priveledge... Enough said.. Philip
