The driver side lock actuator on my 1999 Explorer has stopped working. It got so I couldn't even use the key to lock the driver door. I know I can get a replacement part, but after taking of the door panel and trying to get at the actuator, I am concerned about doing the work myself. Does anyone have any tricks for making the job easier? Are there special tools that would make it easier? Or would it be best just to take it to a repair shop and let them do it?
Bebore you replace the actuator, check that you do not have an electrical issue (broken wire in door accordion)... If it a defective actuator you can replace with a generic unit (ebay/$5.00), I have used them with good results... Philip
Thanks. I'd already browsed the thread. I understood it to be that he had a problem with the wiring. My problem is definitely the actuator. It began working sluggishly, then worked only when I used a key, and finally I couldn't even lock or unlock it with a key. All other doors and switches work fine, and even the switch on the drivers door locks and unlocks all the other doors. So my guess is it's the actuator. What I can't decide is whether or not I should attempt a swap myself. It looks to me very difficult to get at the actuator itself. But maybe there are tricks to making it easier.
OK. I didn't read far enough into the thread. The 1AAuto video for the actuator replacement was helpful. I guess now it's time to get my hands dirty. Thanks for the info caseys.
Don't forget to get some spray lithium grease and give the mechanisms a little lubrication. I had the same problems with my actuators and didn't have to replace any of them after I sprayed a little grease and worked them around a little.
