Boy, do I have questions!
Any information, links, resources would be greatly appreciated.
Let's start with rear bumpers: were they chromed or painted white out of the factory? What were the options for buyers?
Thanks in advance.

If you did opt for a rear bumper, then you had your choice of the factory contour bumper (white, silver, or chrome), or a dealer-installed aftermarket towing ("dock") bumper.
Since most buyers wanted to, or have the choice to, tow with their trucks, you'll find a heavy 75-lb or more dock bumper on, I figure, more than 80 percent of those trucks equipped with one.

1966 was the first year FoMoCo offered a step bumper. But most people opted for aftermarket step bumpers well into the 1970's.
Here on the West Coast, the largest supplier was the Fey Bumper Co., provided dealers with display racks that were usually placed in showrooms.
Most aftermarket step bumpers (there were myriad different types) have the brackets welded on. The extended 'wrap around' version weighed over 100 lbs.
Ford used 4 brackets that were hopeless "weak sisters." A slight tap caused the bumper to sag like an old swaybacked nag.
