Hey guys tonight I am taking out old generator from my 63 f100 233 and instaling a 1g mastercraft 3 wire alternator. I believe I will need a bracket but not sure which one. I found this one at napa... NAPA AUTO PARTS
If thats not the right one can you guys tell me what will work? thanks
waaa, boo-hoo, ma ma, oh woe is me, what can I do?
When you buy a 50 year old rolling pile of misery, you have to accept certain things. When you make swaps of things that were never offered originally you have to fab stuff up.
Does Mastahcraft list a bracket for a 223? Probably not. You won't find one in a 223 car either. Same jazz applies, alternators not available in cars until 1965 (excepting 1963/64 Thunderchickens).
Just went through a similar situation on a power steering bracket for my 460 that had been transplanted into my truck by the previous owner, did some online research but didn't feel comfortable with any of those solutions so I went to the junk yard and pulled three different power steering brackets and pumps off different old V8 Ford trucks, none of them worked perfectly but one of them was close, fabricated a bracket and made up some spacers and after messing around with it for a while got it all to fit and mount up safely, measured and bought a belt of the correct type and length from my local parts store, I was a bit scared the first time I started the motor but everything lined up and worked perfectly, I used a bunch of straight edges to line things up, used a level and a tape measure to verify and all worked.
Gave me confidence to redo my alternator bracket which was correct for the motor and worked but had been hacked up over the years and was not attached securely. Now all works well, moral of my story is take some pictures of your engine and go to the salvage yard and start pulling.
Ianmatt,
Let me know how the Gen to Alt swap turns out for you. My '64 223 still has the original generator setup, and when that eventually goes I'm thinking about changing over. Thanks in advance man!
I got it swapped. I used a 60 amp alternator from a 1980 f150 truck. Working great so far. i had a small shop out by my n help me do it. They re-did most of the wiring because it was so old and my gen light and radio had not been hooked up by previous owner so got that done too. I spent $100. Not bad to learn a few things nd get it rnning good.
