I understand them getting rid of the hard drive. The last generation of Pioneer Nav units had the hard drive. Lots of vibration and failures were high. Some tried the new solid state drives, but they're still pricey. It was kinda a pain to load everything on them via CDs anyway. Too time consuming. The next generation lost the hard drive option and they improved the iPhone/iPod/external media drive bluetooth interface. Think about it, most folks carry their entire music collection with them on their smartphones these days. If the bluetooth interface of the new units is solid it should be seamless.
I agree that the Platinum isn't all that impressive. I too hate the tailgate and the rear fender emblems. This thing is supposed to be more luxurious than the King Ranch and I just don't see it. However, I love the fact that its a single tone exterior with painted to match bumpers. I'd like to see that in a Lariat or a single tone King Ranch.
I get the whole "platinum thing" top of the line Ford. With a little extra paint, (black) on the tailgate and lettering, to match the PTM bumpers, I could see myself driving a black Platinum.
It won`t be much Longer probably within a year or so and I will be on the market for a new truck. I have been having trouble deciding Whether the new one needs to be a King Ranch, or a platinum. Decisions, decisions.......
Hard drives in a mobile environment aren't the best application for them... I deal with enough hard drive failures in datacentres which are fixed and controlled environments, let alone having mechanical spinning disks in non-temperature controlled environments that get very cold in the winter and very hot in the summer, plus being tossed around while the vehicle is in motion. Urk.
I believe the point of the new system is that they simply provide a USB host interface and the end user supplies their own storage medium - whether that is another mechanical hard disk, or a solid state flash drive, or an integrated media player or smartphone (all glorified flash drives in this application). With the latter, then A2DP Bluetooth profile is another way it can work. This gives the end user more flexibility and choice.
I don't personally believe in having elaborate entertainment systems in vehicles... I personally listen to MW AM radio all the time (groundwave propagation is the best) ... but I can see why the new system has been designed this way. I do consider it moving forward by allowing more flexibility.
My pickup has been used extensively for pulling heavy loads, and going to my cottage on a road that has seen much better days and not once, has the hard drive system let me down. I don't baby my truck in fact I'm the kind of guy who beats it since I trade on a regular basis. Its a great system and even in 30below or 35 above I've never had issues. But...at the same time, I am open to change and I'm sure ford believes its a step in the right direction.
Just checked out the 2013 Platinum and it turned me off like a cold shower, guess it may appeal to some. I think I will keep my 11 and see what 2014 brings.
So from what I have read, is this new system supposed to be able to do everything you can do from say a Laptop? Or am I misunderstanding something?
I'm assuming its the same Sync system they put in most of the other Ford models. I've used the one in the newer F-150s and Edge. Relies on either a USB or bluetooth interface to devices with shared media capability. I'm sure it also allows Pandora streaming or the like.
I'd be curious to know if will do bluetooth audio streaming from a phones library and display the Song Tag info as well as Album artwork. Same capability for Pandora streaming.

Nice lookin truck for sure, but ya that tailgate really stands out on the all black. Its not a bad thing though. Congrats, you're going to love the power of this beast.

Welcome to FTE and the 6.7 section. I hope you enjoy your truck and this forum. In the end it doesn't matter what out gripes are with the platinum...just that you are happy with your decision.
