Hello friends-
I am trying to get my 76 f-100 in prime running condition. The smog pump had seized (did not have a belt on it any longer) and was just in the way of me working on other parts of the engine, so I tore it out. Is that gonna be a problem? Also, are there any other auxiliary parts that I don't need? My engine has the 390 motor in it. Don't want to chop everything, but I was told that eliminating the unnecessary might help. I think the carb also has an older cruise control mechanism attached that can be removed as the truck no longer has the controls in the cab.

Refrain from hacking on it.. it might cause issues down the road. Instead, "undo" the previous so-called "repairs", unwanted accessories, and take the time to do it with quality.
Meaning, avoid using typical crimp connectors and instead opt for barrel connectors or solder and heat shrink. It only takes a few more minutes and you'll have confidence in the connections. Crimp connects appear sloppy, are exposed to the elements, and tends to loosen over time. In addition, I have worked on too many vehicles with twisted splices held together with electrical tape. That's a big red flag to me that the PO didn't give a hoot.
Don't get me started about finding household wire nuts.....eeeeeeek.
What is this?--it was connected to the smog/air pump before I removed it. Can I remove this as well? Should I cap the port that led to the air pump? I looked for diagrams online. Could this be a by-pass valve? I want to fire up the truck tomorrow after doing some work for a week, but I want to have all the loose ends tied up before I do so. Thanks for any help.
I posted the image in my gallery/pictures (figuring out the gallery posting was driving me crazy). It's called "The Other Woman".
