Primer type for galvanized cowling?

Can someone recommend a primer for my galvanized cowling? I used laquer primer the first time, and after a couple of years it began to peal up. I'd like a quality coating this time, one that will bond and seal and not peal.

Thanks. k

You could try some self etching primer. It has some acid properties that etches the metal for adhesion. Clean the area with wax and grease remover, sand down to bare metal, wipe clean again with the wax and grease remover and spray the etching primer. Automotive epoxy primer is another alternative, but I haven't use it..yet. Either way, the prep of the surface will determine the outcome. Usually the good old laquer primer holds well if the surface is clean and has 320 or 400 scratches to adhere to.

Agree self etching or automotive epoxy. Rustoleum makes a self etching primer in spray bomb available at larger hardware or home improvement stores. Eastwood sells self etch and epoxy as well as any autobody supply shop.

Also agree on the careful cleaning. I like to use scotchbrite and solvent for the final clean.

Regular primer will flake off.
