Just bought the truck last week and ahve a few questions. The man i bought it from said it has a C6 tans<<<<< I thought these would have had an AOD? I would like to get a little more go power I looked at a few posts that showed some new heads and a cam change but, I am unable to find it now. What are the specs on the cam and the heads? Also want to go to a 5 speed I was thinkin the mazda 5. Thanks for any help. From a new guy.
Since the motor is a 351 4x4, the C6 is an 'old' heavey duty version of the old small C4, both 3 speeds and no converter lockup or overdrive..
As to the ECM control system, it is a 'Speed Density' system not mass air.
With this system a cam change cannot be done changing the cam profile to far.
Reason is the system is fueled by MAP control sensed off the intake manifold vacuum. If the cam profile change is to wild the vaccuum drops.
The MAP senses this and tends over fuel the motor causing starting and idle issue from to much fuel.
Sometimes the fuel pressure can be adjusted lower to account for this if the cam is not to long in profile otherwise idle hunting takes place.
Bottom line is the control system runs solely on a 'computer model' program that is fixed.
The only sensor 'inputs' are one OX sensor, Pip, coolant and intake air temp.
Later when the control system changed to Mass Air, more flexability is available for cam changes etc.
The Mustang guys have been all through this in the 80s and 90s as I have been with a Lincoln Mark 7 and other Ford cars of that period.
Good luck.
That year truck should have an E4OD transmission provided no one has swapped it out for a C6. An easy way to tell drive it down the road about 60 mph and press the overdrive off switch on the end of the gear shifter. If the truck down shifts you got the E4OD if not many other possibilities. You gotta watch it on your lobe seperation angle 114 degrees is the magic number for a speed density system.
